Aleppo earthquake Buni - 1138, Syria [died: 230 000]
Aleppo is located along the northern Dead Sea, which is a plateboundary separating the Arabian plate from the african plate. Thisearthquake is the first of the two consequences of the earthquake inthe region: October 1138 until June 1139 and the more severe of a series of September 1156 until May 1159.
The area most affected is the Harim. Sources indicate that thefalling castle and the church has been destroyed. Fort of Atharib,then occupied by Muslims, has been destroyed. The fortress also collapsed, killing 600 of the palace guards, though the governor andsome people survived, and fled to Mosul.
